Beauty Expert Explains Why We Shouldn’t Wash The Ends Of Our Hair

Every woman knows that managing our unruly hair should be considered a full-time job, and one of the parts that give us the biggest hassle is our ends.

One woman has gone viral on TikTok for explaining why when it comes to shampooing the ends of our hair, less is more.

Flawless Hair

Perhaps it is the dream of every woman to have perfect runway-ready hair. Whether silky smooth, bouncing curls, or flawless colors, when we have a good hair day, we truly feel like we're on top of the world.

But when those days don't happen and our hair has a temper tantrum, it makes us just want to give up and throw our hair into a messy bun and say, "Well, I tried."

Showering Your Ends With Attention

So what is often the most frustrating part of our hairdo? It's the ends.

Prone to dryness, frizz, and split ends, we often fight with this part of our hair, and lord knows we've tried every mask and oil on the market to tame them. Like any part of your body, hair is finicky and requires a lot of TLC.

A Brief Throwback

With this in mind, beauty expert and TikTokker Abbey Yung shared a now-viral video last year that told us we were shampooing our hair wrong. Namely, that we weren't "emulsifying" and lathering the shampoo in our hands before applying it to our hair.

How We Normally Wash Our Hair

So when you hop into the shower, what is your normal haircare routine? Do you shampoo your hair first and vigorously rub shampoo through your scalp before scrubbing the ends? Afterward, do you rinse your hair and repeat the process with conditioner?

If this sounds like you, Abbey has a piece of advice.

Focus On Your Scalp

In the TikTok, Abbey stands in the shower and shampoos her hair. She vigorously runs her hands around her scalp which causes the shampoo to lather, but, she doesn't touch the ends of her hair at all—and there's a reason for that.

"Shampoo is made to clean the scalp, not the ends of our hair," the video caption reads.

Leave The Ends Alone

In an example of what people typically do when washing their hair, Abbey then holds up the ends of her hair which are lathered in shampoo. She explains that the ends of our hair are the most "fragile," so massaging shampoo into the ends can strip them and cause breakage.

In fact, hair is actually weakest when wet.

Here's What To Do Instead

What should you do instead? Turns out, nothing! Abbey explains that people should leave the ends of their hair alone because when you go to rinse off your scalp, the shampoo will gently travel down the length of your hair through to your ends and remove buildup (thanks to gravity).
